Is your child struggling with anxiety, fears, low confidence, bullying, behavioural issues? Are you struggling to cope and find the help that you need? I help children by listening, engaging their imagination and using creative metaphors like magic carpets, virtual helmets, space rockets, fairy lands and golden confidence footballs to help them to process their feelings, let go of problems and visualise success and happiness.
Using your child's natural creativity, hypnotherapy can help children to deal with and resolve emotional and behavioural issues. Hypnotherapy is a safe, gentle, natural and effective therapeutic tool for children aged between approximately 6 - 17 years. It can be used to successfully deal with a wide range of childhood and adolescent issues.
Creative and imaginative
Hypnotherapy works by harnessing your child's inner resources and natural gift for imagination. Kirsty encourages children to use hypnotherapy to discover their own creative solutions to problems. Children find this process empowering and confidence boosting. Hypnotherapy offers your child a non-threatening and creative way to deal with difficult feelings or behaviours that are negatively affecting their life. The focus of the sessions is always on helping your child to manage their feelings and discovering positive ways to alleviate their symptoms rather than analysing the cause of the issue.
Children's hypnotherapy uses the same techniques of relaxation, imagery and visualisation that are used with adults but adapted for children. Even very young children can enjoy relaxing with their eyes closed but this is not necessary for the treatment to be effective as all that is required is for them to engage in active imagination which most children do with ease and pleasure.
Working with Parents
Children vary greatly in their development and level of maturity so the age ranges given below are a rough guide. I work closely with the parents of younger children and with older children as appropriate. The level of parental involvement is assessed on an individual basis. Depending on the age and wishes of your child they may ask for you to wait outside the therapy room or it may be that they want you in the room for the first session but not for subsequent sessions. It is very important to allow your child to make this choice but all children under 16 years must still be accompanied to the session by their parent(s)/carer.
Parents often report that coping with their child's issue can trigger and bring to the surface their own unresolved emotional conflicts, feelings and insecurities. This can be very challenging and parents are advised to consider one to one sessions. Parents usually find that they are much better equipped to help and support their child once they have had the opportunity to resolve their own issues. Please see The Resolve Program for details of adult therapy.

Younger Children age 6 - 13 years
For younger children, the emphasis is on working in partnership with the parents. I teach parents simple techniques to use at home as well as treating the child. I adopt this approach for younger children because:
I believe that for young children the most effective help and support for any emotional issue will always be from their parents. Sharing a few simple techniques with a parent can often be enough to give them the tools and confidence to deal with most issues now and in the future.
Children's hypnotherapy can be used whenever there is a need for emotional help and support, reassurance or confidence building. Hypnotherapy can harness both your child's and your own, perhaps forgotten, natural exuberance and gift for imagination, play and creativity.
For younger children, the approach consists of 2 x 60-minute sessions. The first session is for you the parent(s)/carers to attend without your child. This is an important opportunity for you to discuss your child's issue openly and honestly, how it affects them and how it affects you and other family members. I will explain how children's hypnotherapy works and give you a practical demonstration of the techniques with a short introductory hypnotherapy session.
The second session is for you and your child to attend together. The focus of this session is your child. The session begins with an opportunity, if your child wishes, to speak about what has been happening from their perspective. I use visualisation and relaxation techniques chosen specifically for your child's developmental age and individual personality to help them manage their feelings and enhance positive self-beliefs. The session finishes with fun, simple and easy to follow instructions for you to use at home whenever you need help now or in the future.
Most issues can be helped with 2 - 3 sessions but subsequent sessions are always available if required
Older Children - age 13 - 17 years
Your child may ask for you to wait outside the therapy room or it may be that they want you in the room for the first session but not for subsequent sessions. It is very important to allow your child to make this choice but all children under 16 years must still be accompanied to the session by their parent(s)/carer. For older children, the emphasis is on encouraging and facilitating the discovery of their own creative solutions.
Hypnotherapy offers older children a creative and non-threatening way to deal with difficult feelings. It is not about seeking out the cause, the focus is on helping them to discover their own unique and creative solutions to issues and feel more positive about themselves.
Most children and young people enjoy the relaxation techniques used in hypnosis and find the process of discovering their own creative solutions to problems empowering and confidence-boosting. This approach utilizes your child's natural resourcefulness and gift for imagination and visualisation.
The first hypnotherapy session is 60 minutes and subsequent sessions are up to 45 minutes. Most issues can be helped with 2 - 3 sessions but subsequent sessions are always available if required.
The session begins with an opportunity for your child to talk freely about their issue, how it affects them, how they feel about it and what they would like to change. I will explain how hypnotherapy works and provide a hypnotherapy session tailored specifically to your child's needs.
I use visualisation and relaxation techniques chosen for your child's developmental age and individual personality to help them manage their feelings and enhance positive self-beliefs. Children tend to grasp these techniques quickly and easily which means they not only get help now but gain an invaluable life skill which they can use in the future.

"I took my 7 year old son to see Kirsty as he was having bouts of frustration and anger probably partly related to death of a sibling. Not only was Kirsty so natural and friendly with him but the school noticed how much better he was after just one session. Thank you for your help. "
Parent, 7 yr old boy, Warminster
